Full scale model of
Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples
Hospital patient room.
There's nothing like comfort to help one heal, Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples has taken this philosophy to heart. In fact, the Clinic has so successfully incorporated an inviting, comfortable environment into the design of Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples Hospital that the facility's interior bears little resemblance to traditional hospitals. Residents of Southwest Florida and beyond will be able to see the facility for themselves and experience Healing Hospitality-the Clinic's unique approach to inpatient care-in early 2001, when the hospital is scheduled to open.

"We put tremendous thought into this hospital's design and are excited about the way it has taken shape," said Cleveland Clinic Florida CEO Harry K. Moon, M.D. "The facility will not only offer tremendous comfort to our patients, but it has also been designed to provide state-of-the-art support to our clinical staff and facilitate the finest care."

How did Cleveland Clinic arrive at such an innovative design? With the guidance of Dr. Moon and the Cleveland Clinic Florida team, the architectural firm of Marshall Erdman &
Associates put itself in the patients slippers. Going far beyond the efforts of most hospital designers, they started by enlarging patient rooms to accommodate surprising amenities. Then, a full-scale model was built to perfect the cutting edge improvements before construction began.

Upon completion of the 170,000-squarefoot hospital, each room will be fully private and will include an attractive cherry wood wall unit with ample desk space, a chair and a computer hook-up station. Colorful comforters, fabric draperies and framed artwork will blend together to achieve a warm and welcoming ambiance. These well-appointed accommodations will also include under-the-counter refrigerators and dual function television monitors, on which patients can confirm appointments, events, and meal orders. Additional highlights will include spacious bathrooms with roll-in showers, comfortable seating areas for visitors, and designated work areas for staff. What, s more, medical equipment such as monitors, IV instruments, and state-of-the-art cardiac telemetry
will be hidden behind cherry paneled cabinets when not in use.

As Dr. Moon points out, "When the cabinets are closed it is difficult to tell if these are patient rooms or hotel rooms. Our patient rooms represent the complete integration of hospitality and medicine."
Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples Hospital will further offer a full emergency department open around the clock, an intensive care unit, and other critical support services including laboratory and pathology processing. Specialized study equipment such as MRI, CT, angiography, cardiac catlerization, ultrasound and more will also be on site. in every department, the Healing Hospitality approach will be part of the mission--even in food service, which will offer a restaurant-like nienu for every meal.
At Cleveland Clinic Florida Hospital, "Hospitality" applies to more than just surroundings, asserts Dr. Moon. It is a gracious attitude of serving and wanting to go beyond what is expected. The new hospital is setting the standard for twenty-first century medicine by focusing on the needs and feelings of its patients.

If you experience difficulty while reading or have trouble focusing, it may be time for an eye examination. Now, you can schedule your exam at Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples, where ophthalmologist Mimi Groom, M.D. has recently established a new Ophthalmology Department offering comprehensive eye examinations and specialty treatment for a variety of conditions including glaucoma and cataracts.
Dr. Groom, certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology, has been a member of Cleveland Clinic Florida's medical staff since 1994. Having practiced at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Fort Lauderdale for the past six years, she has permanently relocated to Naples to direct the Department of Ophthalmology and offer the latest services and treatments to Southwest Florida patients, from prevenative care to prescriptive therapy and surgery.
As Dr. Groom notes, "Any change in sight should be immediately investigated, and even if there is no noticeable change everyone should have regular eye exams. Even without noticeable symptoms, eyes can undergo changes that can only be detected by an ophthalmologist."

She points out that glaucoma is a prime example of a condition that is not normally symptomatic the best defense against it is early detection through annual screenings. Dr. Groom explains that without not going to know they have it. The incidence of glaucoma increases with age, and sometimes diabetes can affect it. The risk goes up six fold with a family history of glaucoma." Cataracts, too, often "creep up" on patients. But since the change is gradual, many do not realize how poor their vision has become over time.
"Cataract surgery is so advanced now, and recovery is remarkably fast, " says Dr. Groom. "Once
their vision has been corrected, patients can't believe how well they can see-and how poorly they saw before.

If you’re a woman over 40 and you are experiencing any of the physical changes or common problems associated with menopause, take note! Today, there are many therapeutic and surgical options to help you cope with the effects of menopause.

At Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples, gynecologist and Fellow of the American College of Gynecology Dennis Hidlebaugh, M.D. is helping women explore the latest and most effective treaments.

“It wasn’t so long ago that women simply had to suffer the effects of menopause, vith little or no medical treatment,” says Dr Hidlebaugh. “What’s more, hysterectomies were common and widespread. Now, we have effective pharmaceutical products to control hormone levels and, in most cases, we can avoid radical hysterectomies, which can be very difficult to recover from.” To help alleviate menopause symptoms, Dr. Hidlebaugh first establishes baseline hormonal levels, then may prescribe appropriate medications to help regulate fluctuations.

He also specializes in minimally invasive procedures that can help with many of the problems common after 40—although women of all ages may benefit. As he explains, conditions such as uterine adhesions and fibroids can be corrected without the need for open abdominal surgery. Through the use of a hysteroscope —which allows him to ‘see’ inside and make corrections without cutting an incision—the lining of the uterus can be removed. Called endometrial ablation, the procedure has an impressive record of results. “Over 90 percent of women who have the procedure are satisfied with the results,” says Dr Hidlebaugh. He points out that other benefits of minimally invasive procedures include substantially lower costs, greatly reduced risk of complications and a recovery time of just a few days.

Chronic stuffiness, nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose are symptoms that plague many people, yet few realize that this problem may be caused by a common physical ailment: enlarged "turbinates," the medical term for the parts of the nose that serve as its natural humidifier and air filter. According to David Greene, M.D., an otolaryngologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples, there is flow a simple, minimally-invasive procedure to permanently shrink the turbinates and bring
welcomed relief.

Dr. Green notes that signs of enlarged turbinates may include increased discomfort when sleeping or lying down, and frequent yet unsuccessful use of nasal sprays. The condition is easily diagnosed, and treated with the use of a somnoplasty probe, which requires local anesthesia. The procedure itself uses radio frequency, and takes lust two minutes per turbinate to perform. It is practically painless, and recovery is immediate.
"This is a highly effective procedure that offers significantly better nasal breathing to the many people suffering from nasal obstruction," says Dr. Greene. "Research has shown an eighty-five percent success rate."
For more information on the procedure, contact Dr. Greene at Cleveland Clinic Florida Naples, (941) 348-4000.
